Stop ChatGPT using your chats for training (personal accounts)
If you use ChatGPT on a personal account, you can stop your conversations being used to train OpenAI’s models. For work, use your business’s approved tool.
- In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Data controls.
- Turn off “Improve the model for everyone”. It applies on every device where you’re signed in.
- Be aware that giving a thumbs up or down on a response can still send that whole conversation for training.
- For one-off questions, use a Temporary Chat: it isn’t saved to your history, doesn’t update memory, and isn’t used to train models (it’s kept for up to 30 days for safety checks).
- Review what it remembers: Settings, then Personalization, then Memory — manage or delete what you don’t want kept.
- None of this makes it OK to paste client or staff data into a personal account.
