Remote Desktop stopped working after a Windows update
September 2026’s Windows update broke Remote Desktop connections for some people. Microsoft released a fix on 16 September.
- Go to Settings, then Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered, including the out-of-band update released on 16 September, then restart.
- Try your Remote Desktop or virtual desktop connection again.
- Don’t uninstall security updates yourself to work around a problem.
- Still not connecting? Tell IT what you’re connecting to, the time it failed and any error message.
