Spot an investment or crypto scam
Investment scams promise high returns with little or no risk, often via slick websites and fake celebrity endorsements. The returns aren’t real.
- Treat ’guaranteed’ high returns and ’no risk’ as the clearest warning signs there are.
- Be sceptical of investments found via social media ads, unsolicited calls, or celebrity endorsements you can’t verify.
- Check the business on ASIC’s register and the ASIC Investor Alert List of known scams before sending a cent.
- Be very wary if you’re rushed, offered a ’limited’ window, or steered to download a specific trading app.
- Recognise the withdrawal trap — you can take out small amounts early, then face ’fees’ or ’tax’ to access the rest.
- Never invest money you found through a stranger online, and get independent advice first.
