Spot a romance scam
Romance scammers build trust online over weeks or months, then ask for money. The story is always why they can’t meet.
- Be cautious of an online match who quickly professes strong feelings but always has a reason not to meet or video call.
- Watch for a steady stream of excuses tied to money — a stuck shipment, a medical bill, a travel emergency.
- Notice if their photos and story don’t quite add up; try a reverse image search of their pictures.
- Never send money, gift cards or crypto to someone you haven’t met in person, no matter the reason.
- Be alert if they steer you toward an investment or trading platform — that’s a romance-baited investment scam.
- Talk it over with someone you trust, and contact IDCARE on 1800 595 160 if you’re unsure.
