Spot a romance scam

Romance scammers build trust online over weeks or months, then ask for money. The story is always why they can’t meet.

  1. Be cautious of an online match who quickly professes strong feelings but always has a reason not to meet or video call.
  2. Watch for a steady stream of excuses tied to money — a stuck shipment, a medical bill, a travel emergency.
  3. Notice if their photos and story don’t quite add up; try a reverse image search of their pictures.
  4. Never send money, gift cards or crypto to someone you haven’t met in person, no matter the reason.
  5. Be alert if they steer you toward an investment or trading platform — that’s a romance-baited investment scam.
  6. Talk it over with someone you trust, and contact IDCARE on 1800 595 160 if you’re unsure.

Still stuck after those?
