How to read a web link before you click it

The wording of a link can say anything. Reading the real destination is a thirty-second habit that stops most scams.

  1. On a computer, hover your mouse over the link and read the address shown at the bottom of the screen.
  2. On a phone, press and hold the link to preview the destination without opening it.
  3. Read the address from the right of the first single slash back — the domain just before that slash is who you’re really visiting.
  4. Watch for lookalikes: paypa1.com, micros0ft.com, or a real brand buried in a long string like apple.com.security-check.io.
  5. If the destination doesn’t clearly belong to the organisation you expected, don’t click it.

Still stuck after those?

You’ve done the right thing by trying. Send whedo.it a quick note — what you tried, what you saw — and a senior pair of eyes will be on it the same business day.
