Never plug in a USB stick you found

A ’lost’ USB drive in the car park is a known attack. Plugging it in can infect your machine the moment it connects.

  1. Never plug an unknown USB drive into your computer to ’see what’s on it’ or find the owner.
  2. Understand that malware can run automatically the instant a rogue device is connected.
  3. Be just as cautious with free USB sticks handed out at events or left on desks.
  4. Hand any found drive to your IT team rather than investigating it yourself.
  5. Only use storage devices you bought yourself or were issued by work.

Still stuck after those?

You’ve done the right thing by trying. Send whedo.it a quick note — what you tried, what you saw — and a senior pair of eyes will be on it the same business day.
