Fake purchase alert with a number to call? Don’t ring it

Scamwatch is warning about messages claiming you’ve bought something — and giving a number to call to cancel it.

1. The message claims a purchase of a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars — phones, software, tickets or crypto — often branded PayPal, Apple or Google.
2. It can arrive by text, email, app notification or even a calendar invite.
3. Don’t call the number in the message. The “support” person will ask for bank details, remote access or gift cards.
4. Check for yourself: log in through the official app or by typing the website address.
5. Never give remote access or pay with gift cards to someone who contacted you.
6. Already shared details? Call your bank on the number on your card, then report to Scamwatch.
