Spot a charity or disaster-appeal scam

Scammers exploit floods, fires and crises with fake appeals, often impersonating real charities. Your donation goes to them, not the cause.

  1. Be cautious of unsolicited donation requests by text, email, social media or door-knock after a disaster.
  2. Don’t feel rushed — pressure to give right now is a warning sign.
  3. Verify the charity on the ACNC register at acnc.gov.au before donating.
  4. Donate through the charity’s official website you typed yourself, not a link someone sent you.
  5. Avoid paying by gift card, crypto or transfer to a personal account.
  6. Be wary of names that mimic well-known charities with a slight twist.

Still stuck after those?

You’ve done the right thing by trying. Send whedo.it a quick note — what you tried, what you saw — and a senior pair of eyes will be on it the same business day.
