Spot a charity or disaster-appeal scam
Scammers exploit floods, fires and crises with fake appeals, often impersonating real charities. Your donation goes to them, not the cause.
- Be cautious of unsolicited donation requests by text, email, social media or door-knock after a disaster.
- Don’t feel rushed — pressure to give right now is a warning sign.
- Verify the charity on the ACNC register at acnc.gov.au before donating.
- Donate through the charity’s official website you typed yourself, not a link someone sent you.
- Avoid paying by gift card, crypto or transfer to a personal account.
- Be wary of names that mimic well-known charities with a slight twist.
