What passkeys are and how to start using them
Passkeys are the newer, phishing-resistant replacement for passwords. They feel like just unlocking your phone, and there is nothing for a scammer to steal or trick out of you.
- Understand the idea: a passkey is a secret stored on your device that unlocks with your fingerprint, face, or PIN — you never type or remember a password.
- Know why it is safer: there is no password to phish, reuse, or leak in a breach, and it only works on the genuine website.
- Look for Create a passkey in the security settings of services that support it, including Microsoft, Google, and Apple.
- Follow the prompt, then confirm with your device’s fingerprint, face, or PIN.
- Let it sync through your iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager so it works across your devices.
- Keep one other sign-in method enabled as a fallback while passkeys are still rolling out everywhere.
