Use virtual or disposable card numbers
A virtual card number lets you pay online without exposing your real one. If a merchant is breached, you bin the number, not the card.
- Check whether your bank or wallet offers virtual or single-use card numbers in its app.
- Generate a dedicated number for free trials and unfamiliar online stores.
- Set a low limit or a single-use rule so a leaked number can’t be drained.
- Delete or freeze a virtual number the moment you’re done with that merchant.
- Keep your real card number for trusted, recurring billers only.
