Use a hardware security key such as a YubiKey

A hardware key is a small physical device you tap or plug in to log in. It is the strongest common second factor and is well worth it for high-value accounts.

  1. Buy a reputable key (for example a YubiKey) that matches your devices — check it has USB-C, USB-A, or NFC as you need.
  2. Buy two if you can: one to use and one to lock away as a backup, so a lost key does not lock you out.
  3. In the account’s Security settings, choose to add a security key as a sign-in method.
  4. Follow the prompts to insert or tap the key and set a PIN if asked.
  5. Register the backup key the same way before you finish.
  6. Test signing in with the key, then store the spare somewhere safe and separate.
