Switch between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi

5 GHz is faster up close; 2.4 GHz reaches further through walls. Picking the right one fixes a lot of patchy Wi-Fi.

  1. Check your network names; many routers show two, often with 5G in one name.
  2. On Windows, click the Wi-Fi icon in the system tray and pick the band that suits where you sit.
  3. Choose 5 GHz when near the router for speed; choose 2.4 GHz when far away or behind thick walls.
  4. Tick Connect automatically on whichever you settle on.
  5. If you only see one network name, the router is band-steering for you and there’s nothing to change.

Still stuck after those?
