Recognise a romance or investment lure
These scams build a relationship over weeks, then steer you toward a fake investment. The warmth is the bait for the money.
- Be cautious with online romances that move quickly to deep affection but always avoid meeting or video calling.
- Watch for the pivot from romance to money — a ’great’ crypto or trading tip they want to share with you.
- Treat any platform they introduce as suspect, even if it shows your balance growing — those numbers are fake.
- Recognise the withdrawal trap: you’re allowed small early payouts, then blocked and asked for ’fees’ or ’tax’ to get the rest.
- Never send money, crypto or gift cards to someone you haven’t met in person.
- Talk to a friend or family member before acting — isolation is how these scams keep working.
