Spot a remote-access tech-support scam

Someone calls or pops up claiming your computer is infected and offers to fix it — if you let them log in remotely. That access is the scam.

  1. Be suspicious of any unexpected call or pop-up saying your computer has a virus or has been ’hacked’.
  2. Know that Microsoft, Telstra, the NBN and your bank do not cold-call you about computer problems.
  3. Never install remote-access software (like AnyDesk or TeamViewer) because a caller told you to.
  4. Hang up or close the pop-up — don’t ring the number it shows.
  5. Never give bank details or let a stranger ’log in to fix it’ or ’process a refund’.
  6. If you already gave access, disconnect, run a security scan, and call your bank and IDCARE on 1800 595 160.

Still stuck after those?
