Spot refund and ’overpayment’ scams
The hook is a refund you didn’t expect or a claim you were ’overpaid’. Either way they want you to send money back.
- Be suspicious of any unexpected refund, especially one that ’accidentally’ overpaid you.
- Never send money back off the strength of a screenshot or email — check your real balance first.
- Remember a genuine bank can reverse a true error itself; it won’t ask you to transfer funds.
- Ignore demands to buy gift cards or send crypto to ’repay’ — no legitimate refund works that way.
- If pressured, hang up and call the company on a number you find independently.
