Spot refund and ’overpayment’ scams

The hook is a refund you didn’t expect or a claim you were ’overpaid’. Either way they want you to send money back.

  1. Be suspicious of any unexpected refund, especially one that ’accidentally’ overpaid you.
  2. Never send money back off the strength of a screenshot or email — check your real balance first.
  3. Remember a genuine bank can reverse a true error itself; it won’t ask you to transfer funds.
  4. Ignore demands to buy gift cards or send crypto to ’repay’ — no legitimate refund works that way.
  5. If pressured, hang up and call the company on a number you find independently.

Still stuck after those?
