Stay safe on public Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi at cafes, airports and hotels can be watched or faked. A few habits keep your data yours.

  1. Avoid online banking, payments or logging into work systems on public Wi-Fi where you can.
  2. Be wary of networks with generic names like ’Free Airport WiFi’ — attackers create lookalikes to harvest data.
  3. Use your phone’s mobile data or a personal hotspot for anything sensitive.
  4. Use your company VPN if you have one — it encrypts your traffic on untrusted networks.
  5. Turn off automatic connection to open networks so your device doesn’t join one without asking.
  6. If you must use public Wi-Fi, stick to general browsing and save the sensitive tasks for later.

Still stuck after those?
