What to do the moment money leaves wrongly
Whether it’s a scam or a fat-fingered transfer, the first hour matters most. Work the list in order.
- Phone your bank straight away on the number on your card and ask them to attempt a recall or freeze.
- Change your online banking password and any reused passwords if a scammer may have your details.
- Write down dates, amounts, account numbers and any phone numbers or emails involved.
- Report it to Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au so the wider response can act.
- If your identity may be exposed, call IDCARE on 1800 595 160 for a free recovery plan.
- Keep all texts, emails and receipts — your bank and police may need them.
