What to do the moment money leaves wrongly

Whether it’s a scam or a fat-fingered transfer, the first hour matters most. Work the list in order.

  1. Phone your bank straight away on the number on your card and ask them to attempt a recall or freeze.
  2. Change your online banking password and any reused passwords if a scammer may have your details.
  3. Write down dates, amounts, account numbers and any phone numbers or emails involved.
  4. Report it to Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au so the wider response can act.
  5. If your identity may be exposed, call IDCARE on 1800 595 160 for a free recovery plan.
  6. Keep all texts, emails and receipts — your bank and police may need them.

Still stuck after those?

You’ve done the right thing by trying. Send whedo.it a quick note — what you tried, what you saw — and a senior pair of eyes will be on it the same business day.
