Keep your software and browser updated
Most attacks exploit known holes that an update has already fixed. Staying current is the cheapest defence you have.
- Turn on automatic updates for Windows, your browser and your phone where you can.
- Restart your computer when it asks — many updates only finish installing after a reboot.
- Keep your web browser current; an out-of-date browser is a common way in.
- Don’t ignore update prompts for weeks — the gap between patch and install is when attackers strike.
- Remove software you no longer use, since unpatched old apps are an easy target.
- Leave business-managed updates to your IT team and report any device that never seems to update.
