Keep your software and browser updated

Most attacks exploit known holes that an update has already fixed. Staying current is the cheapest defence you have.

  1. Turn on automatic updates for Windows, your browser and your phone where you can.
  2. Restart your computer when it asks — many updates only finish installing after a reboot.
  3. Keep your web browser current; an out-of-date browser is a common way in.
  4. Don’t ignore update prompts for weeks — the gap between patch and install is when attackers strike.
  5. Remove software you no longer use, since unpatched old apps are an easy target.
  6. Leave business-managed updates to your IT team and report any device that never seems to update.

Still stuck after those?

You’ve done the right thing by trying. Send whedo.it a quick note — what you tried, what you saw — and a senior pair of eyes will be on it the same business day.
