Card skimming and card-not-present basics
Your card details can be stolen at a dodgy terminal or online without the card ever leaving your hand. A few habits cut the risk.
- At ATMs and pumps, give the card slot a wiggle — a loose or bulky skimmer overlay often comes away.
- Cover the keypad with your other hand when entering your PIN.
- Prefer tap or mobile wallet over inserting your card where you can — there’s nothing to skim.
- Online, only enter card details on sites showing https and an address you typed yourself.
- Keep transaction alerts on so a stolen ’card-not-present’ charge shows up immediately.
