Free a file that says it’s locked or ’in use’
A file ’locked for editing’ usually means it’s still open somewhere or mid-sync. Work down the calm options before forcing anything.
- Check you don’t have the file still open in another app or on another device, and close it.
- Wait a moment and let OneDrive finish syncing — the cloud icon shows when it’s done.
- On the web, open the file’s version history; the lock often clears once edits are saved.
- Ask any colleague who might have it open to close it.
- Restart the OneDrive client, or sign out and back in, to clear a stuck local lock.
- If it’s still locked after all that, contact whedo.it — an admin can release a server-side lock.
Still stuck after those?
You’ve done the right thing by trying. Send whedo.it a quick note — what you tried, what you saw — and a senior pair of eyes will be on it the same business day.
