Share a SharePoint document with someone outside the company
External sharing is allowed but requires the right link type. Default is internal-only.
- Open the document in SharePoint or OneDrive on the web.
- Click the Share button (top-right).
- Click the “People in your organisation” dropdown.
- Change to “People you choose” or “Anyone with the link” depending on the sensitivity.
- For external recipients, type their email address — they’ll get a verification code by email.
- Set the permission (View or Edit), tick “Block download” if the file shouldn’t leave the link, then send.
