Understand what a VPN is and when to use it
A VPN creates a private tunnel for your traffic, used for work access and safer browsing on shared Wi-Fi. Not magic, but useful.
- Think of a VPN as a sealed tunnel between your device and your work or a server, hiding traffic from the local network.
- Turn it on before using public Wi-Fi (cafe, hotel, airport) so others on that network can’t snoop.
- Connect to your work VPN when accessing internal systems or files from outside the office.
- Expect a small speed drop; that’s normal and the trade-off for the privacy.
- Turn it off when you don’t need it, as some streaming and banking sites block VPN connections.
