Set up an authenticator app for the first time

An authenticator app turns your phone into a code generator. One app can hold the second factor for dozens of accounts.

  1. Install a reputable authenticator app — Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator are the common choices.
  2. Open the website or app of the account you want to protect and find its two-factor or security settings.
  3. Choose Authenticator app as the method, which shows a QR code on screen.
  4. In the authenticator app, tap Add account (or the plus icon) and scan that QR code with your camera.
  5. Enter the six-digit code the app now shows, to prove the link worked.
  6. Save any backup codes the service offers before you finish.
