Restart your modem or router properly

A proper power-cycle clears most home internet glitches. The order and the wait both matter.

  1. Unplug the power from the modem (and the router, if separate).
  2. Wait a full 30 seconds so the connection genuinely drops.
  3. Plug the modem back in first and wait for its lights to settle, usually two to three minutes.
  4. Plug the router back in and give it another minute to come up.
  5. Reconnect a device and test; if lights stay red or off, the fault is likely with the internet provider.
