Approve a sign-in with number matching

Microsoft now shows a two-digit number on the login screen that you type into your Authenticator app. It is a deliberate speed bump that stops you approving a login you did not start.

  1. When you sign in, note the two-digit number shown on the computer or website screen.
  2. Your phone will show an Authenticator prompt asking you to enter a number.
  3. Type the number from the sign-in screen into the app, then approve.
  4. If no number is shown to you, or the number does not match, do not approve — that prompt was not started by you.
  5. Check the app name and location shown in the prompt match what you are actually doing.
  6. If a prompt appears when you are not logging in at all, deny it and change your password — someone has your password.

Still stuck after those?
