First steps after a blue screen or sudden restart
One blue screen is usually nothing; a pattern is worth reporting. These steps settle it down and gather what IT needs.
- Let Windows restart fully and sign back in, then save your open work straight away.
- Note any stop code shown on the blue screen (for example a name in capitals), as it points to the cause.
- Run Settings → Windows Update and install everything, since driver fixes often ship this way.
- Open Reliability Monitor (search ’reliability’) to see whether one app or driver keeps failing.
- If it happens more than once, send the stop code and the time to your IT support rather than guessing.
