First steps after a blue screen or sudden restart

One blue screen is usually nothing; a pattern is worth reporting. These steps settle it down and gather what IT needs.

  1. Let Windows restart fully and sign back in, then save your open work straight away.
  2. Note any stop code shown on the blue screen (for example a name in capitals), as it points to the cause.
  3. Run Settings → Windows Update and install everything, since driver fixes often ship this way.
  4. Open Reliability Monitor (search ’reliability’) to see whether one app or driver keeps failing.
  5. If it happens more than once, send the stop code and the time to your IT support rather than guessing.

Still stuck after those?

You’ve done the right thing by trying. Send whedo.it a quick note — what you tried, what you saw — and a senior pair of eyes will be on it the same business day.
