Find a file I saved but can’t remember the name

Windows can search inside file contents, not just file names — if you tell it to.

  1. Press Win to open Search.
  2. Type a phrase from inside the document — not the file name.
  3. Wait a second — Windows will search file contents in your indexed folders (Documents, Desktop, OneDrive).
  4. If it’s not finding it, open File Explorer, navigate to the likely folder, click in the Search box (top-right), and type your phrase. Use quotes for exact phrases.
  5. Still missing? Try OneDrive on the web at onedrive.live.com — it searches inside Office files too.

Still stuck after those?

You’ve done the right thing by trying. Send whedo.it a quick note — what you tried, what you saw — and a senior pair of eyes will be on it the same business day.
